It’s often tempting to feed your dog with human food. That’s especially true when the dog is begging for it at the table. That can also be very dangerous because there are human foods that are bad for dogs. It’s best to feed them just food for dogs. Pets have allergies. Many human foods are toxic for dogs. Human food can make your dog obese as well. Here are some human foods that should always be avoided:
1. Chocolate and caffeine
Many of us know that chocolate is said to be poisonous to a dog. This is because chocolate, like caffeine, has methylxanthines. They can be found in cacao seeds. They cause diarrhea, vomiting, tremendous thirst, abnormal heart rhythms, and even death in dogs. They can also cause seizures. Dark chocolate is worse than milk chocolate for dogs. Baking chocolate is even worse by far than either dark chocolate or milk chocolate for dogs.
2. Grapes and raisins
We don’t know what is in them that can be so toxic to dogs, but eating them will often result in kidney problems or even kidney failure in dogs. Avoid these fruits until further research can explain what causes these problems.
3. Onions and garlic
These things irritate a dog’s gastrointestinal tract. Anemia is often a result of eating these two items. They can also damage a dog’s red blood cells.
4. Raw eggs
Salmonella and E. Coli are two types of bacteria that will hurt dogs, and they are often found in eggs. Eggs can also lead to problems with a dog’s skin and coat because eggs have an enzyme known as avidin that prevents the absorption of a B vitamin called biotin. Never feed eggs to your dog.
5. Raw meat with bones
Like eggs, raw meats have bacteria such as E. Coli and Salmonella. It’s tempting to feed raw bones to a dog. After all, they love bones. Dogs can also choke on bones. Sometimes bones can splinter. Those splinters can puncture a dog’s digestive tract and other things.
Many human foods can hurt dogs. However, there are healthy dog treats that provide a more than satisfying snack such as apples, blueberries, carrots and sweet potatoes.
Although it’s fun to give the dog some treats, make sure that you are always aware of your dog’s dietary needs first.
